I-76 Pennsylvania Truck Accident Attorney

Interstate 76 is an interstate highway that extends 435 miles from the Akron Ohio through Pennsylvania and ending in New Jersey.  For most of Pennsylvania, it runs along the Pennsylvania Turnpike and passes through all three major cities in Pennsylvania: Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia. Recently, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that portions of the Pennsylvania Turnpike including Interstate 76 would have the speed limit raised to 70 miles an hour.

With such an expansive road and a high-speed limit it is easy to see why there might be accidents on interstate 76. Because this road cuts through the heart of Pennsylvania it is easy to see why tractor-trailers and commercial drivers would choose to take this road.  Unfortunately, when tractor-trailers are on the road driving at a high rate of speed there is always the chance that you will be involved in an accident.

What are the Types of Commercial Vehicle Accidents?

As you are aware, there are many different types of vehicles that share the road. Vehicles range in size from single person motorcycle to huge 18-wheel tractor-trailers, which can weigh in excess of 80,000 pounds. Last year in Pennsylvania drivers drove an estimated 98.6 billion vehicle-miles on Pennsylvania’s roads and highways.  When you consider that in 2014 the fatality rate was 1.21 deaths per hundred million vehicle-miles of travel, it seems pretty impressive. In fact, this was the second lowest ever recorded in Pennsylvania since the department started keeping records of this in 1935.  However, to those who have lost a loved one or have been injured in an accident involving a commercial vehicle these numbers are not reassuring.  The following is a list of the most common types of commercial vehicle accidents that we have observed.

  • Rear-End collisions – You are probably familiar with this type of collision. A rear-end collision involves a crash in which vehicles that are traveling in the same direction on the same road collide. However, when there is a commercial vehicle involved the injuries from this type of accident will generally be more severe. Smaller cars can either be completely crushed or pushed under a tractor-trailer resulting in massive damage to both the car and to the passenger or passengers.
  • Head-On Collisions – While these collisions may be less common on the Pennsylvania Turnpike they can still occur.  A head-on collision involves a crash in which vehicles traveling in opposite directions, on the same road, collide.  When there is a head on collision involving a commercial vehicle or tractor-trailer it is almost guaranteed that there is going to be an incredible amount of damage.
  • Sideswipe – Commercial vehicles and tractor-trailers, in particular, have a large area that they cannot see a vehicle in the lane next to them. This can result in the tractor-trailer changing lanes when there is already a car in that lane. Often times these results in a sideswipe collision, which can push a vehicle into other lanes or into other cars.

While there are many other types of accidents, these are some of the most common that we have seen. While passenger vehicles typically are the most likely to be in an accident, light truck van, SUV, and commercial vehicles typically result in severe damage to both the car and the passengers.

What are the Different types of Injuries Caused by Commercial Truck Accidents?

Whenever you have a large vehicle that is traveling at a high rate of speed there is the potential that there is going to be severe injuries if there is a collision. On Average in Pennsylvania, each day there are approximately 332 reportable traffic crashes occurred or about 14 crashes every hour, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  Some of the most common injuries that we see include:

Being in a car accident can severely change your life. You may incur exorbitant medical bills or miss time from work. Unfortunately, these injuries merely represent those that are most common. Many other injuries can and do occur as a result of driver negligence, carelessness, and recklessness.

What are Traumatic Brain Injuries?

The brain is the center of the central nervous system and it is responsible for all of the tasks that we do from day to day including driving. However, an injury to the head and brain can be one of the most devastating types of injuries that a person can sustain. Traumatic brain injuries, which are also known as TBI’s, are a potentially life-threatening and almost certainly devastating injury. Injuries to the brain can affect, impair, or destroy the functioning of all other bodily systems and functions. If you have suffered a TBI your life is likely never going to be the same. You may find that the things that you used to do and enjoy are now impossible to do after a traumatic brain injury. They can also lead to problems with memory, focus, attention, and other skills that allow you to be productive at work or at home. Furthermore, they can cause communication difficulties and impair the processing of information.
