Steroid Injections Recalled by NECC

Steroid injections manufactured and distributed by the New England Compounding Center (NECC) have been recalled due to causing fungal meningitis in patients who received the shot to treat pain and/or inflammation. The epidural medication given to individuals harmed by this outbreak is not the same type of medication administered to women during childbirth. The meningitis outbreak associated with the steroid shots is not contagious.

The product recall lawyers at The Reiff Law Firm are closely following the steroid injection recall. We are very concerned for the tens of thousands of individuals that were potentially exposed to fungal meningities. In any situation where a defective or contaminated product is causing injury or illness, our attorneys work diligently to conduct thorough investigations and build effective cases for those harmed by a manufacturer’s negligence. For over three decades, our legal team has protected the rights of personal injury victims so that they obtain the money they deserve for lost wages, emotional distress, hospital bills, and other damages. Meningitis Symptoms & Seeking Medical Attention

Anyone who has received a steroid injection and is experiencing symptoms of meningitis, such as headache, fever, nausea, stiffness of the neck, confusion, dizziness, and discomfort from bright lights, is being advised by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to see a doctor right away. The sooner meningitis is treated, the better a person’s chances of survival. One of the most frightening aspects of this meningitis recall is that the disease develops steadily, rather than suddenly, and is often very mild in the beginning.

Fungal meningitis affects a person when a fungus infects the shielding membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Once a fungus has spread from the bloodstream to another location in the body, fungal meningitis can develop. Treatment involves intravenous antifungal medication and, as a result, may require lengthy hospitalization. Some individuals suffering from fungal meningitis may experience stroke.

Details of the Recall

All products manufactured and distributed by the NECC were voluntarily recalled on October 6, 2012 as a precaution after three lots of preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate (80mg/ml) were recalled on September 26, 2012. Injections of the potentially tainted steroid drug were administered as early as May 21, 2012. An investigation across 23 states, including Pennsylvania, is examining meningitis in patients who were injected with epidural steroids in the spine.

Although the steroid injections are the only NECC product that is believed to have been contaminated, all NECC products are being recalled as a safeguard against further illnesses being contracted. Pharmaceutical manufacturers are responsible for making products that are free of contaminants and do not contain any unknown dangerous side effects. When negligence leads to consumer injury, illness, or death, drug manufacturers may be held legally accountable.

Helping Victims Recover

As a procedure that is typically safe and rarely involves complications, epidural injections are usually the least of a person’s worries. At The Reiff Law Firm, our Pennsylvania product liability attorneys have dedicated over thirty years to upholding justice for innocent consumers who have been harmed as the result of manufacturer oversight. Far too often, our lawyers have seen major corporations put profits ahead of safety, jeopardizing and indefinitely altering the lives of trusting consumers.
