Don’t believe everything you read about the safety of Lasik procedures advises medical malpractice attorney who almost lost his own vision.

Several years ago, I decided that I had spent enough time wearing Coke bottle eyeglasses and decided to go to a well known eye care center to have lasik surgery. Yes, I too heard all of their ads on the radio and TV and read about their success rate. At first I went into a waiting room where at least a dozen people were sitting and waiting to be shuttled from station to station for various exams prior to meeting the doctor and being scheduled for surgery.

At every station, I was assured how safe the procedure was and when I met with the doctor it was quite brief. However, I had read a number of promotional materials about this particular eye center and despite the fact that I had a severe astigmatism and degree of nearsightedness, I was assured that I was a proper candidate for the lasik procedure.

My Own Vision Suffered After a Lasik Procedure

After the first lasik surgical procedure, which was performed by the founder of the center who had impeccable credentials, I noticed a series of complications and was told to come back for revision. Once again, I went through the process of waiting, being shuttled from station to station for a series of measurements and was scheduled for a “surgical enhancement”.

My vision was now blurred as if I had Vaseline in my eye. After the enhancement by a different doctor, my eyesight was actually worse than prior to the original procedure, and the next day, I sensed that the operating physician was surprised and uncomfortable. My situation continued to deteriorate over the next week after which point I sought out multiple opinions from various corneal specialists throughout the United States. I was finally able to secure the services of an established and highly regarded eye surgeon in Boston associated with Massachusetts Eye and Ear Institute who literally saved my vision.

I was operated on in Boston after which time I was told that I was never a candidate for lasik surgery due to the fact that I had a coned shaped cornea, as well as other problems that should have lead the initial physician to properly inform me of the same.

What I did come to recognize is that many lasik providers make false claims with inflated promises and thankfully the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is once again cracking down on false claims and promises made by lasik eye surgery centers.

The FDA now gives eye doctors 90 days to update any and all advertising and promotional materials that make false claims. The agency stated that they will take regulatory action; however, as an experienced medical malpractice attorney who has handled several lasik surgery malpractice cases and has been through the mill with my own personal story, I still believe that many eye centers will continue to operate their businesses in the same fashion as always.

Before you consider lasik surgery, it is probably not a bad idea to do your due diligence and get a few opinions as to whether or not it is the right procedure for you.
